Surfer James Eastman was attacked by shark at Big River Beach in California

James Eastman, a 39-year-old surfer, was bitten by a shark on both legs while surfing at Big River Beach in Mendocino Headlands State Park around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. He fought off the shark by hitting its nose, paddled back to shore with help from off-duty lifeguards, and was taken to Adventist Hospital in Fort Bragg. Officials closed beaches for 48 hours following the incident.
