Saudi Arabia hosts over 1.5 million pilgrims for annual Hajj pilgrimage
Saudi Arabia is preparing to welcome between 1.5 and 1.6 million Muslim pilgrims for the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which began in late May 2026. The pilgrimage occurs during the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, required once in a lifetime for Muslims who can afford it. Authorities have implemented crowd-control measures, and pilgrims arrived from conflict-affected regions including Sudan and Yemen.
