State Department cut Middle East expertise staff as Iran crisis escalates
The Trump administration reduced staffing in the State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs by more than 80 positions and eliminated the dedicated Iran office while conflict with Iran intensifies. The bureau temporarily appointed Mora Namdar, a lawyer with limited management experience, and left key positions vacant including the assistant secretary role. Current and former officials say these cuts limit the U.S. ability to handle the Middle East crisis.
