New Jersey man arrested for using fireworks and camping fuel to distract from jewelry theft at Maryland Walmart
Anthony J. Rhodes, 36, of Berlin, New Jersey, was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree arson and manufacturing an explosive device after allegedly igniting camping fuel and fireworks in the children's clothing section of a Walmart in Elkton, Maryland on April 29. He stole approximately $10,000 in jewelry from the store's counter during the commotion and fled on a motorcycle. The fire caused around $5,000 in direct damage but resulted in an estimated $10 million in smoke and soot damage to inventory.
