Transgender high school athlete wins multiple events at California track finals, officials award gold medals to runner-up female competitors
AB Hernandez, a 17-year-old transgender athlete at Juniper Valley High School, won first place in girls' long jump, high jump, and triple jump at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section finals. Tournament officials awarded gold medals to the female athletes who finished second, and some female competitors avoided appearing with Hernandez at the medal ceremony. The event drew approximately 2,000 spectators, many of whom voiced outrage over Hernandez competing in the girls division.
