Steve Cohen announces he will not seek reelection after Tennessee Republicans redraw his congressional district
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), a 10-term incumbent representing Memphis, announced Friday he is ending his reelection campaign after Tennessee's Republican-controlled legislature redrew his majority-Black 9th Congressional District into a heavily Republican seat. The redistricting follows a Supreme Court decision weakening Voting Rights Act protections for minorities. Cohen said the new map was deliberately drawn to defeat him and announced he would challenge it in court, but will not appear on the August primary ballot.
