Louisiana state Senate advances congressional redistricting plan eliminating one majority-Black district
Louisiana's state Senate committee voted early Wednesday to advance a redistricting plan that would eliminate one of the state's two majority-Black congressional districts, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the previous map as an illegal racial gerrymander. The vote was 4-3 along party lines after hours of testimony from Black residents and Democrats opposed to the move. Republicans rejected a more aggressive alternative that would have eliminated both majority-Black districts.
