Pentagon raises Iran war cost estimate to $29 billion at congressional budget hearings

Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules Hurst told House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees on Tuesday that the US-Israel war with Iran has cost $29 billion, up $4 billion from the $25 billion figure provided in late April. Hurst attributed the increase to updated repair and replacement costs for equipment and general operational costs. The estimate does not include the cost of repairing US military facilities in the Middle East damaged by Iranian counterattacks.

The split, in one line
Some outlets foreground senatorial skepticism that the figure is suspiciously low and omits facility damage; others lead with Hegseth deflecting on funding timelines; wire services treat the $29B figure as the headline without congressional pushback.
