Trump proposes suspending the federal gasoline tax as prices rise amid the US-Iran war
President Trump announced Monday he wants to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel, saying it would last 'till it's appropriate.' Congressional approval is required for any suspension, and several Republican lawmakers quickly introduced legislation while others, including Senate Majority Leader Thune, remained noncommittal. National average gas prices have risen roughly 50% to $4.52 per gallon since the US-Iran conflict began, straining consumer budgets.
