California announces $20 million taxpayer-funded free diaper program administered through nonprofit with ties to Governor Newsom's wife
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a program called "Golden State Start" to provide free diapers to newborns in hospitals statewide, funded with $20 million in taxpayer money. The program will be administered by Baby2Baby, a nonprofit whose co-CEO Norah Weinstein sits on the board of the California Partners Project, co-founded by Newsom's wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Critics argue the cost per diaper is inflated compared to retail prices and question the selection process and conflicts of interest.
