Federal judge rules Trump administration's DOGE-led cancellation of humanities grants unconstitutional
U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon in New York ruled Thursday that the Trump administration's cancellation of over $100 million in humanities grants through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) violated the First Amendment and Fifth Amendment equal protection rights, and that DOGE lacked lawful authority to terminate the grants. The judge permanently barred the administration from ending the grants and found that DOGE staffers improperly used race, gender, and DEI keywords—including ChatGPT—to systematically eliminate funding for projects related to Black history, Holocaust testimony, Asian American studies, and other protected categories.
