Mali military leader Goita assumes defence ministry after predecessor killed in rebel attacks
Mali's military leader Assimi Goita took over as defence minister following the death of his predecessor Sadio Camara, who was killed in a car bomb attack during coordinated rebel assaults on April 25. The attacks, launched by an alliance of al-Qaeda-linked jihadists and Tuareg separatist groups, represent the largest offensive in Mali in nearly 15 years and resulted in the capture of the northern city of Kidal. Goita simultaneously retains the presidency while assuming defence responsibilities, a consolidation of power at a time when the military government's authority faces significant challenges.
