Louisiana suspends congressional primaries after Supreme Court strikes down majority-Black district as unconstitutional racial gerrymander
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais that Louisiana's congressional map, which created a second majority-Black district, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Gov. Jeff Landry signed an executive order suspending the May 16 House primaries, with early voting having been scheduled to begin Saturday. The ruling is expected to prompt other Republican-led states to redraw congressional maps ahead of the November midterms.
