FIFA amends regulations to allow Afghan women's team to compete internationally

FIFA's council voted Tuesday in Vancouver to amend its regulations, allowing Afghan women players to compete as an official national team in international matches despite the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan Football Federation refusing to recognize them. The amendment grants FIFA exceptional authority to establish or approve national team registration when players face exclusion due to circumstances beyond their control. Afghan women players, many of whom have lived in exile for nearly five years, can now compete under the name Afghan Women United starting with Olympic qualifiers in 2028.
