Belgian court rules former diplomat Etienne Davignon must stand trial over 1961 killing of Congo PM Patrice Lumumba
A Brussels court ruled that 93-year-old former Belgian diplomat Etienne Davignon must stand trial for alleged involvement in the 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Congo's first prime minister. Davignon is accused of participation in war crimes including unlawful detention, transfer, and degrading treatment of Lumumba. He is the only surviving member among 10 Belgians accused by Lumumba's family in a criminal case brought in 2011.
