Palestinians hold local elections in West Bank and Deir al-Balah, Gaza, the first Gaza vote since 2006.
On Saturday, Palestinians voted in local municipal elections across the occupied West Bank and in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, marking the first election held in any part of Gaza in more than 20 years. Over one million voters were eligible across Palestinian territories, with approximately 70,000 eligible in Deir al-Balah alone. Hamas was barred from standing as candidates were required to recognize the PLO, though a slate widely seen as Hamas-aligned participated and Hamas police provided security at polling stations.

The split, in one line
Some outlets foreground democratic celebration and voter enthusiasm; others lead with symbolic limitations and stalled ceasefire; Al Jazeera frames the vote within genocide and ongoing war, while others avoid that language entirely.
