UN development chief warns Iran war will push over 30 million people into poverty
UNDP administrator Alexander De Croo warned on Thursday that the ongoing war involving Iran will push more than 30 million people back into poverty. Disruption to fuel and fertiliser supplies due to the blocking of cargo vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has already lowered agricultural productivity and will affect crop yields later in the year. De Croo also said the conflict has already wiped out 0.5 to 0.8 percent of global GDP.
