European Court of Justice rules Hungary's anti-LGBTQ law violates EU fundamental values
The European Court of Justice found on Tuesday that Hungary's 2021 law banning content about LGBTQ+ people from schools and primetime TV breaches EU law on multiple grounds, including Article 2 of the EU Treaty on fundamental values. The ruling marks the first time the ECJ has found a member state guilty of violating EU law based exclusively on breaching the bloc's foundational values of pluralism and fundamental rights. The judgment comes nine days after Hungarian voters elected Péter Magyar as prime minister, defeating Viktor Orbán after 16 years in power.
