Daniel Zavala Ramos, 42, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Laredo, Texas to conspiring to smuggle migrants from Guatemala through Mexico to the U.S. The plea relates to a December 9, 2021 truck crash in Mexico where at least 160 migrants were packed into a tractor-trailer that overturned, killing at least 53 people and injuring over 100. Ramos faces a possible life sentence and was the first of six Guatemalans charged in connection with the crash to be convicted.
