March 2026 sets record as most abnormally hot month in continental US history
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released data showing March 2026 had an average temperature of 50.85°F, which was 9.35°F above the 20th century normal. This exceeded the previous record of 8.9°F above normal set in March 2012, making it the most abnormally hot month regardless of time of year in 132 years of records. More than 19,800 daily temperature records were broken across the country during the month.
