Jim Whittaker, who became the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1963, died Tuesday at his home in Port Townsend, Washington at age 97. His historic climb came 10 years after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first scaled the peak. Whittaker later became a close friend of Robert Kennedy and led various climbing expeditions throughout his career.
