Woods Hole researchers discovered oldest known whale song recording from 1949
Scientists at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution discovered a humpback whale song recorded in March 1949 in Bermuda while digitizing old audio recordings. The recording was captured by researchers testing sonar systems with the U.S. Office of Naval Research and predates Roger Payne's discovery of whale song by nearly 20 years. The recording also provides insight into the ocean's soundscape from the 1940s when it was much quieter than today.
