Experimental Lp(a)-lowering drug pelacarsen fails to reduce cardiovascular events in 8,350-patient trial

Researchers reported at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago that pelacarsen, an experimental drug that lowers lipoprotein(a), did not reduce major adverse cardiovascular events despite cutting Lp(a) levels substantially. The trial randomized 8,350 patients with prior cardiovascular events and elevated Lp(a) to the drug or placebo and followed them for about five years. Novartis, which sponsored the study, is abandoning the drug.
