Voters in several states approve ballot measures restricting transgender athletes and youth gender treatments

In the 2026 elections, voters in Arizona and Nebraska approved measures designating school sports teams by sex assigned at birth. In Colorado and Washington, similar initiatives on girls' sports and, in Colorado, a ban on certain surgeries on minors, held leads with votes still being counted. The measures passed amid broad Democratic victories in congressional and statewide races.

The split, in one line
All five outlets cheer the measures, but they split on scope: some frame it as a lone conservative bright spot in a blue wave, others as voters bucking their own party, and one leads with Washington's sex-verification requirement.
