House Speaker Mike Johnson says he will not seek the minority leader post after Republicans lose the House majority in the midterms

After Republicans lost their House majority in the 2026 midterm elections, Speaker Mike Johnson told staff on a Wednesday morning call that he will not run for minority leader in the next Congress. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan are seen as likely candidates to succeed him, with House Republicans scheduled to hold leadership elections on Nov. 10. Johnson had previously said he intended to remain the top House Republican even if the GOP lost the majority.
