South Africans vote in local elections seen as a test of the ANC's declining support
South Africans voted on Wednesday in local elections for eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district councils and 205 local councils. The vote is widely viewed as a verdict on the African National Congress, which fell below 50 percent in the 2021 municipal elections and lost its parliamentary majority in 2024. Johannesburg is the key battleground, where the DA fielded former leader Helen Zille for mayor.
