Pakistan military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said on Friday that the army is "cautiously optimistic" about mediation between Iran and the United States in the eight-month-old Iran war. Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Tehran twice this month, most recently on Monday with Saudi and Turkish officials. Chaudhry warned of "powerful spoilers and detractors" and said the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement does not bar new members such as Iran.
