Pope Leo XIV casts a mail-in ballot in the 2026 US midterm elections, the first pope to vote in a US general election.

The Vatican confirmed on Friday that Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost and a US citizen, submitted a mail-in ballot in Illinois ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The Holy See press office said he has voted whenever eligible, including during his years in Peru. Illinois records show Prevost requested Democratic primary ballots in 2008 and 2010 and Republican ballots in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Most outlets report the Vatican confirmation as a first. Some frame it as civic duty and a historic first; others lead with a requested, not yet returned ballot and his feud with Trump.
