Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta announces it is closing under state pressure
Novaya Gazeta, founded in 1993, announced on October 30, 2026 that it is ceasing operations, with editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov saying authorities and special services forced the editorial team to end its work. The paper said it will shut down servers and cease operations on November 9. The closure follows a home search of Sokolov and the arrest of colleague Oleg Roldugin on charges of unlawful access to computerised information.
