Lancet Countdown report calls climate change a global health emergency as harms accelerate

The 2026 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, led by University College London with the WHO, found climate-linked health harms accelerating a decade after the Paris Agreement. Researchers attribute 68% of heat-related deaths from 2016-2023 to climate change, estimate nearly 3 million such deaths over the period, and report over $1 trillion in lost potential income in 2025. Nearly 150 researchers from more than 30 countries called for climate change to be declared a global health emergency.
