Hackers targeted the Federal Election Commission's electronic filing system, causing an outage a week before the midterm elections.

The FEC's electronic filing system went offline around 10 p.m. ET on Monday, October 26, 2026, after a hacking attempt, and remained down Tuesday. The outage blocked campaigns and PACs from filing 24- and 48-hour spending reports ahead of the November 3 midterms. The FEC said its IT staff were working to restore service and that the outage would not affect voters' ability to cast ballots.

The split, in one line
Most outlets relay the same Reuters-sourced email and FEC statement; Politico alone adds an anonymous-source detail that the intrusion was noticed early and quite narrow and compartmentalized, while others stress less disclosure before the vote.
