Venezuelan opposition leader María Machado returns to Caracas from exile

María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on 26 October 2026 after roughly 10 months abroad, traveling from Lara state to Caracas amid large supporter crowds. Nicolás Maduro was removed from power by US forces on 3 January 2026 and replaced by former vice-president Delcy Rodríguez, who has since reached an oil deal with the Trump administration. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned a day later against street protests as a route to democracy and outlined preconditions for elections.
