Czech ruling coalition advances public media funding overhaul through first parliamentary vote

The Czech coalition government, led by Prime Minister Andrej Babis and backed by the far-right SPD, voted overnight to send a bill changing public media funding to committees. The bill would scrap the 205 crown ($9.45) monthly household broadcasting fee and replace it with state budget funding, cutting Czech Television and Czech Radio funding by about 15 percent. Critics, including opposition parties, broadcasters and journalists planning a November 3 strike, say the change threatens broadcaster independence.
