A fire damaged the Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler's former Alpine retreat known as the Eagle's Nest, and police detained a suspect.

A fire broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus on the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, late on Friday October 23, 2026, and was still burning on Saturday. Around 200 firefighters responded, hampered by the remote location, snow and wind. Police detained a 33-year-old German man near the scene and opened a criminal investigation into suspected arson.

The split, in one line
Most outlets run near-identical wire copy on the blaze and arrest; the split is in how much of the suspect's psychiatric and possible political motive they report, and whether officials vow to rebuild or the building is written off as a ruin.
