Dozens of Israeli fighter jets flew toward Iran's border in a training sortie before turning back

On Monday, dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets and refueling aircraft flew more than 800 miles from Israel through Syrian and Iraqi airspace, turning back near Iran's western border. Israel notified the US in advance and described the mission as a "power projection" training exercise meant to deter Iran ahead of the October 27 Israeli elections. The sortie occurred the same day Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met Netanyahu at Ovda Air Base, which officials said was unrelated.
