A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay the state $25 billion in penalties over misleading users about Facebook privacy in the Cambridge Analytica case.

Judge Francis Mathew issued the penalty order on October 21, 2026, after a September jury verdict found Meta liable for more than 43 million violations of New Mexico's Unfair Practices Act. The statutory maximum produced a figure above $219 billion, which the judge reduced to $25 billion. Meta said it will appeal, and the money is designated for New Mexico's education fund.

Meta to pay New Mexico a historic US$25 billion in Cambridge Analytica case
The split, in one line
Most outlets report the same verdict and penalty. The right frames it as a Soros-backed AG weaponizing fines to reinstate censorship; others treat it as accountability for privacy lies. Reuters alone asks whether the $25B will survive appeal.
