The UK government approved the Jackdaw North Sea gas field, reversing a prior ban on new fossil fuel drilling.

UK Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh approved the Jackdaw gas field, located about 150 miles east of Aberdeen, on October 21, 2026. The government said the field could supply gas to homes and businesses by the end of the month, boost domestic gas production by around 6% at peak, and support hundreds of jobs. Environmental groups criticized the decision, and the government also announced a £2 billion Energy Wealth Fund.

The split, in one line
Coverage splits on why the UK acted: one camp frames it as a pragmatic response to an energy crisis, another as climate vandalism that won't lower bills. The wires just note the long-delayed approval.
