UN human rights experts call on India to halt excessive force against protesters and investigate authorities' conduct

A group of independent UN-appointed experts issued a statement calling on Indian authorities to stop using excessive force against protesters and to conduct an impartial investigation into authorities' conduct. The experts cited reports of injuries, ill-treatment, sexual violence and gender-based abuse during protests and detentions, and urged India to rescind blanket assembly bans and curb digital surveillance and internet disruptions. The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party and other opposition and student groups, demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the removal of 130 million names from voter lists.
