Alberta voters reject a proposal to pursue independence from Canada in a nonbinding referendum.

Alberta held a nonbinding referendum on whether to remain in Canada or begin the legal process toward a binding separation vote. Roughly three-quarters of voters, per unofficial results, chose to remain. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it a great result for Canada; separatist leaders said their movement would continue.

The split, in one line
Most outlets report the same lopsided result and Carney's win. The split is in context: some cast it as a blow to a MAGA-aligned movement and a Trump-driven unity rally, others as a warning that grievances persist and separatism isn't going away.
