Nationwide protests and riots across France prompt curfews and a promised massive police deployment

Protests that began in mid-September over school conditions and the cost of living escalated into nationwide rioting across France on the weekend of October 17-18, 2026, with looting, arson and clashes with police. French authorities reported more than 2,400 arrests and roughly 1,000 injured police, and imposed curfews in parts of Paris, Lyon, Marseille and other cities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised a "massive" police deployment for further protests planned for October 24 and accused far-left groups of an "insurrectionary plan."

The split, in one line
Officials and wire services describe student-led cost-of-living protests hijacked by ultra-left agitators; some right-leaning outlets describe an immigrant and Islamo-communist assault on French civilization, a link French authorities explicitly reject.
