Expedition to Nikumaroro Island finds no evidence of Amelia Earhart's plane
A 17-person expedition led by the Archaeological Legacy Institute and Purdue University arrived at Nikumaroro Island on October 12, 2026, to investigate a satellite-detected object in the lagoon believed to possibly be wreckage from Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra. The team confirmed the object, known as the Taraia Object, was a collection of large trees deposited along the sandspit, not aircraft wreckage. Researchers said the findings did not disprove the broader castaway hypothesis that Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan landed on the island after disappearing in 1937.
