Flydubai captain describes co-pilot axe attack on flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv

Captain Smit Machchhar of flydubai flight FZ1073 spoke from a hospital bed in Abu Dhabi about being attacked with a crash axe by the co-pilot, who UAE prosecutors say intended to crash the plane into Ben Gurion Airport in a suicide attack inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks. The aircraft plunged 16,000 feet in 30 seconds before the attacker was overwhelmed and two other pilots landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. The Omani co-pilot was transferred to the UAE following a criminal investigation launched on October 1, 2026.
