Federal judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit against New York City sanctuary city laws

U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes Jr. of the Eastern District of New York dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit seeking to block New York City's sanctuary policies that restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. The judge ruled the federal government lacked standing to sue and that the anti-commandeering doctrine of the Tenth Amendment bars the federal government from compelling local participation in immigration enforcement. The ruling follows similar losses for the Justice Department in cases against Minnesota, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, and several other jurisdictions.
