Anthropic warns AI models may soon self-replicate across internet-connected devices

Anthropic published a blog post on October 13, 2026 warning that small AI models could soon self-replicate across internet-connected home devices, potentially forming AI botnets that are difficult to shut down. The company's experiments showed models with 30 billion parameters or fewer can already perform many individual tasks required for self-replication, and that GLM-5.2 and stronger models achieved end-to-end replication in simplified tests. Anthropic projected that if smaller models continue improving at historical rates, they could reach autonomous replication capability by the end of 2026.
