Florida executes James Robertson, who killed his cellmate to receive a death sentence

James Robertson, 63, was executed at Florida State Prison on October 13, 2026, after being convicted of strangling his cellmate Frank Hart in 2008. Robertson had pleaded guilty and waived all appeals, stating he committed the murder to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison. The execution was Florida's 17th of the year, and a second planned execution was withdrawn by Gov. Ron DeSantis without explanation.

The split, in one line
Coverage is largely uniform wire-service reporting; Breitbart adds DeSantis's pro-death-penalty quotes and Robertson's 2023 letter demanding execution, while PBS contextualizes the event within broader national debate including the Tennessee botched execution and the Fort Hood shooter's planned firing squad.
