Archbishop Broglio says Catholic soldiers should not serve on firing squad for Nidal Hasan execution

Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who oversees Catholic pastoral services for the U.S. military, released a statement Monday saying Catholic service members assigned to the firing squad for Nidal Hasan's execution should request to be excused, citing Church teaching against capital punishment. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on October 8 that Hasan's execution is scheduled for December 3 at Fort Hood and would be livestreamed publicly. Hasan was convicted by court-martial for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others.

Catholics in US Army must not take part in firing squad, armed forces archbishop says
The split, in one line
Most outlets neutrally relay the archbishop's statement, but Breitbart frames Hasan's victim count as 14, including an unborn child, while others cite 13. Daily Wire and Al Jazeera add broader Catholic and political pushback; CNN centers an anti-death-penalty activist rather than the archbishop's statement.
