Migrant boat capsizes off Djibouti coast killing over 100 people

A boat carrying more than 300 migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti on the night of October 8-9, 2026, while traveling from Djibouti to Yemen. The International Organization for Migration reported at least 139 deaths including 15 children, with 84 people still missing; more than 80 survivors were all Ethiopian nationals. IOM attributed the sinking primarily to overcrowding and noted the vessel went down shortly after departure near the port town of Obock.

The split, in one line
Early outlets cite 109 dead, 116 missing while later outlets report 139 dead, 84 missing, a real-time toll update, not editorial spin. Framing is otherwise uniform: all outlets defer to IOM figures and Coissac quotes with no meaningful narrative split.
