Eritrean troops entered Ethiopia's Tigray region amid renewed conflict between federal forces and Tigrayan rebels.

Fighting erupted in late September 2026 between Ethiopian federal forces and an alliance of rebel groups including the TPLF, ending the 2022 Pretoria ceasefire. Ethiopian forces recaptured the Tigrayan capital Mekelle while Eritrean troops crossed into northern Tigray, prompting Ethiopia to write to the UN Security Council accusing Eritrea of invasion. Eritrea denied backing the TPLF and accused Ethiopia of seeking a pretext to seize Eritrean territory, as diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed.
