UK downgrades East Jerusalem consulate to a mission after Israeli closure deadline expires

Israel ordered the closure of the UK consulate in occupied East Jerusalem within 30 days, in retaliation for UK sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. As the deadline expired on October 8, 2026, the consulate's signage was removed and most diplomats departed, but the UK said the building would remain open as a "UK Mission" with a reduced staff of seven. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said staff were temporarily withdrawn for security reasons and that the UK does not accept Israel's right to close the consulate.
