Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David announced on October 7, 2026 that prosecutors will seek the death penalty for former Marine Nigel Max Edge, who is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for a mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina on September 27, 2025. Edge, who served as a Marine sniper in Iraq and sustained a traumatic brain injury, was previously found to lack mental capacity to proceed to trial and was transferred to a psychiatric facility in April 2026. His next hearing is scheduled for December 7, 2026.
